Cook for your dog

homemade dog treats

Dylan and Rainey are spoiled and get fresh meals made for them daily. Dylan has food allergies and making homemade dog food seems to keep those under control. We all know that diet plays a key role in longevity and a healthy life. This is true for people and it only makes sense that the same theory holds true for your pets as well. But we can’t be angels all of the time and it’s good to have cake and cookies from time to time…we all deserve it. So, in honor of National Cook for Your Pet Day, I wanted to share some of our favorite recipes for homemade dog treats that Dylan and Rainey (and their friends) love—rosemary crackers and peanut butter cookies.

November 1st is National Cook for Your Pet Day. So, why not celebrate by baking up some yummy homemade dog treats for your favorite four-legged friend!

Rosemary Crackers

These are really quick and easy to make. You can also make a people-friendly version as well by adding some salt and additional rosemary.

Rosemary Crackers

“Rosemary, in most forms (dried, fresh whole plant, tincture, or tea) can be used very safely in dogs, and in fact is Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) by FDA for use in both humans and animals,” says herbalist Gregory L. Tilford, co-author with Mary L. Wulff of Herbs for Pets.
You can make a batch for these homemade crackers for your dogs and a batch for yourself too!

Homemade Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Cookies

We always have a batch of these in the house. You can make the cookies and then freeze them before baking. Just take out what you need and let them defrost while the over is preheating.

Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Cookies

These homemade dog cookies are a favorite with Dylan, Rainey, and their friends. People ask me all the time to make these. They are incredibly simple to make.

Servings 18 cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 2/3 cups whole wheat or unbleached flour

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300°F
  • Mix together honey, banana, peanut butter, and egg
  • Add flour (start with 1 cup) and stir until you form a soft dough (adding extra flour as needed)
  • Roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter of your choice OR, if you are feeling lazy, just take about 1 Tbsp of dough at a time, and roll into a ball and then flatten
  • You can add an egg wash if you want your cookies to look shiny and a little fancy (whisk together 1 egg and 2 Tbsp water and then brush on top of the cookies before baking)
  • Bake for about 25 minutes until golden on the edges. I like a softer cookie, so leave longer if you want a harder cookie. It will be a bit of trial and error as it will also depend on the size of the cookie
  • Cook on a rack before serving as treats
